Arriva North East put up bus fares across the region

The operator has announced an increase to fares on services across the North East, in Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and County Durham.

Prices are set to go up by as much as 80p, with the company blaming increasing costs for the hike in fares.

Adult and child single fares will increase by between 10p and 70p, while the cost of a return ticket will increase by between 20p and 80p from this Sunday (November 20).

The price of some zonal tickets is also set to go up, although young persons and student save zonal tickets will not go up in price.

Arriva services in Teesside and North Yorkshire are not affected by the price hike.

Passengers in the Tees Valley and North Yorkshire will not see any increase to their fares.

In a statement posted online explaining the increase, Arriva said: “Our previous fare increase in the Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and County Durham areas was in January 2022 and was a conservative increase, much lower than the growing CPI rate at the time, with the expectation that Arriva could minimise the level of cost increase passing on to our customers.

“Regretfully, since then, costs such as fuel and utilities have continued to increase and as a result the difficult decision has been taken to undertake this additional fare revision.”
