Police have confirmed that a man has been arrested following an alleged sex attack in a Spennymoor park with one person taken to hospital.

The incident happened this morning before 8am in Jubilee Park, Spennymoor and saw a large police presence.

A female is reported to have been assaulted by a male in the area.

A cordon was soon erected in the park and a number of police vehicles and officers were scene in the area as investigations were underway.

Pictures from the scene showed police tape strewn across the park following the serious sexual assault.

Police have confirmed that a man was arrested this afternoon and currently remains in police custody.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary added: “The park is currently closed while Detectives carry out their inquiries, and it is expected to remain closed for some time.

“An increased police presence will be visible in the area while the investigation continues.

“A further update will be provided once the park has reopened.”

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 8:33 this morning to assist the police at an incident in Jubilee Park.

"Paramedic crews attended and we treated one patient on scene before conveying to hospital.”
