Newcastle’s much-loved Stack is set to return this Christmas in a new location after disappointment when the venue was forced to close earlier this year.

Bosses at the popular shipping container venue have revealed plans to set up at a new temporary site before Christmas, with plans for a new permanent location set to be revealed soon.

The plans, which are expected to be submitted to Newcastle City Council for planning permission in the coming days would see the venue pop-up in Stephenson’s Quarter, behind central station and near to the home of Bongo Bingo at Boiler Shop.

It is hoped that the new venue could be set up before Christmas, with Hadrian’s Tipi also set to return if the plans work out.

Neill Winch, CEO of Danieli Group which owns Stack Newcastle said: “We were overwhelmed by the emotional response our customers shared about their sadness at the closure of STACK Newcastle in May, so we are very excited to be able to announce our plans which we hope will mean its return just in time to celebrate Christmas.”

“Our customers have been very vocal in letting us know that they would be delighted to see STACK come back sooner rather than later, which is why we have taken this opportunity to open a temporary scheme.

“Plans are underway for a more permanent scheme, and we aim to release further details in the coming weeks, but in the meantime hope this news will be well received by our customers.”

The popular venue was forced to close in May to make way for a new HMRC office block being built on its former site where the city’s ODEON cinema once stood.

Back in July plans were announced for a new venue on Pilgrim Street at the Worswick Chambers building which could open in Summer 2023.

Anson House 9 Ltd, which is led by former Stack boss Neil Winch, secured a licence for the new Pilgrim Street venue after a council hearing in July, despite complaints that Stack has been a “nightmare” for its neighbours.

Where will the new Stack be in Newcastle?

The new Stack will be on Forth Street at the Stephenson Quarter site, behind Central Station and next to the Crown Plaza Hotel.

When will the new Stack open?

It is hoped that the new venue will be open in time for Christmas 2022.

What will it look like?

Bosses have said the temporary venue will see the creation of a number of shipping container bars, a double tipi, street food vans, a stage and large screen, all on one level.

It is expected that CGI images of the new venue may be available soon, when plans are officially submitted to the council.
