Stargazing sessions at Sutton Bank Star Hub near Thirsk

The facility – opened last year by the North York Moors National Park Authority – attracted hundreds of eager night owls in its first season of operation.

Visitors are able to gaze through powerful telescopes at the starry night sky and enjoy colourful presentations.

Now another packed programme is planned, starting with an opportunity to spy the Milky Way and glimpse spectacular Saturn on Saturday, September 3.

Richard Darn, lead astronomer, said: “The North York Moors is beautifully dark which is why it was designated as an international dark sky reserve in 2020.

"The public appetite to learn more about the night star is as strong as ever, especially as many people have lost their view of the heavens due to light pollution.

"Public feedback on last year’s events and the hub itself has been outstanding.

"This is a big year coming up with the planets of Jupiter and Mars looking at their best for years.”

Other themed nights planned include moon watches and even simple astrophotography sessions.

The Star Hub is located at the Sutton Bank National Park Centre and is fully accessible.

Tickets are available from £10.50 and include refreshments.
