England Women's football hero Beth Mead is being nominated for the Freedom of Middlesbrough by the town's Mayor.

Beth, who hails from Hinderwell near Whitby, played for Middlesbrough as a youngster before switching to Sunderland then signing for Arsenal aged 21.

Her performances at this summer's Euros competition earned her the player of the tournament trophy and the golden boot after her six goals helped fire the Lionesses into an historic final against Germany on Sunday.

And tonight Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston says he is nominating Beth to be granted the Freedom of the Borough due to her 'heroics' at the Euros.

He also revealed he is looking into whether a mural could be created in the town to celebrate Beth's achievements and those of other women's football trailblazers from the area.

Mr Preston said this evening:" Following her Lionesses heroics, I’m nominating local lass Beth Mead to be granted Freedom of the Borough

"Beth was not only crowned Euro champion along with her inspiring team-mates but was also the six goal top scorer and player of the tournament.

"I’m also looking at the potential for a local artist to create a mural in central Middlesbrough celebrating the achievements not only of Beth but also local trailblazers for women’s football Jordan Nobbs, Maz Wieczorek and Winnie McKenna."
