A County Durham couple have described their surprise after bagging a four-star holiday in the Canary Islands for next to nothing.

Craig Smith and his wife, Leanne will be jetting off to the Spanish Islands after bidding for her trip via Jet2Holidays.

The holiday operator, which flies from Newcastle Airport to dozens of destinations, is allowing customers to 'bid for a break' using its mobile app.

So far, a number of people in the North East have shared similiar success after bidding barely anything and winning a holiday away.

But Craig won his holiday after entering the lowest bid of £30.32 for a seven-night holiday to the Hotel Costa Calero Thalasso & Spa in Lanzarote for two adults.

The Northern Echo:

He said: “I downloaded the Jet2 app after I booked a holiday with them earlier this year.

"When the competition began, I received a notification and just thought ‘you've got to be in it to win it!’ I’ve entered every week, hoping I might be lucky enough to win, but didn’t ever expect I actually would!

"It was my wife, Leanne, that picked the number, she said it had been in her mind all day. I'm so pleased it was, and I can’t wait for our holiday to Lanzarote.”

How the bids work

Jet2Holidays said its 'bid for a break' applies to holiday destinations across Europe, the Mediterranean and Canary Islands.

It said there will be a new seven-night holiday available to bid on each week to hotspots including the Balearics, Canary Islands, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and Spain.

Bids open at 9am on a Monday every week and can be placed until midday on the Thursday, before the lowest unique bid is announced on the same day.

But all is not lost for those unsuccessful, Jet2 said those who do not win their bid will receive a discount code giving them £100 off their next holiday with Jet2holidays.

'Congratulations'

Steve Heapy, Chief Executive Officer at Jet2holidays, said: “Congratulations to Craig for successfully bidding for a holiday with Jet2Holidays through our ‘Bid for a Break’ campaign.

"With international travel now fully unlocked, we know how much UK holidaymakers want to get away to enjoy some much-needed sunshine, and we are giving them the chance to do just that in a fun way for potentially only a few pence.

"With some fantastic holidays available to bid on each week, make sure you get involved and have a bid in mind for next week’s holiday. We wish Craig and Leanne a lovely holiday in Lanzarote."
