The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) has given a warning and some advice to learner drivers to ensure fewer driving tests are wasted per month.

Currently, more than 6,000 tests are being wasted due to learner drivers not showing up, which is equating to 1 in 21 people every single day.

On average, a further 1,100 learners each month are left disappointed as their tests have not been able to go ahead because they arrive late, don’t bring their driving licence or don’t bring a car that meets driving test rules.

To help tackle the issue, the DVSA has launched a new text message service that will send learner drivers helpful reminders and information about their test booking.

Additionally, the DVSA is asking motorists to do their bit and make sure they are test-ready.

The organisation is also asking learners to rearrange their tests if they are not ready.

With the pass rate below 50%, many learners should be more prepared, and failed tests could be used by another candidate who is ready.

DVSA’s Chief Executive, Loveday Ryder said: “We’re working hard to provide more tests, and we’re starting to see that work pay off with more tests available to book.

“But also we’re asking learners and instructors to do their part to help in making sure everyone who is heading for a driving test appointment is fully prepared, has got the right car, the right documents and knows the time, date and location of their test.

“By working together, we’ll see the right people coming for their test, the pass rate increase and waiting times drop.”

What tips are the DVSA offering to learner drivers?

  1. Make sure you or your driving instructor includes your mobile number in your booking, as you will get free reminder texts
  2. Check your instructor is available before booking your test
  3. Bring your provisional driving licence - we cannot tell who you are or what provisional entitlement you have without it
  4. Arrive on time - examiners have a tight schedule so you will miss your test if you are late
  5. Book only through your instructor, or the official online booking service
  6. Don’t book through third parties such as an app or an online seller, there is a risk you will not receive important information such as changes to your test
  7. Make sure you have an instructor’s car or have access to another car well in advance of your test date - without a car, a driving test cannot go ahead
  8. If you take your own car, check on GOV.UK if it can be used on a driving test and make sure you bring an additional mirror and ‘L’ plates
  9. Make sure the car you intend to use is taxed, MOT’d and insured - if the car is not, your test won’t go ahead.
  10. If you or your instructor thinks you’re not ready to take your test, you should rearrange it and allow someone else to use it. You can change your test date on GOV.UK
