An independent feature film shot and set in Darlington, and starring Toyah Willcox, will be premiered in Darlington this weekend.

Give Them Wings was directed by Sean Cronin and is based on the life of a Darlington FC fan, Paul Hodgson, who became disabled following childhood meningitis.

Paul was diagnosed with childhood meningitis at ten months old and his parents were told he would never move or speak. The film, set in 1989, tells the story of Paul's journey to self-acceptance.

Filming locations in Darlington included the bar and grounds of Darlington Football Club and The Foresters Arms in Coatham Mundeville.

Much of the interior scenes were shot in a house in Bishop Auckland that had not been decorated since the 1980s.

Paul said: “It was very eerie watching the film the first time. It’s strange seeing someone playing you and in the more harrowing scenes it was a bit difficult. The actors did a great job though.

“It’s exciting to see it on a big screen. It’s the culmination of a lot of work. Everyone’s hard work has come to fruition, not just me, the whole team. It’s my story but it’s our film. We’ve overcome a lot of hurdles to get to this point.”

Daniel Watson, who plays Paul in the film, said: “Paul's true-life story is incredibly inspiring and shines a light on those living with the after-effects of meningitis. The film demonstrates how a positive attitude and mindset can help you overcome your struggles in life no matter what they are.

“It was great to film in and represent the region where the story took place. It lends a true authenticity that cannot be replicated and almost serves as an extra character in the film.”

Ian Carter, producer, said: “The determination shown by Paul to get this film over the line is encapsulated in the film; it is an emotional rollercoaster with timely injections of humour.”
