An investigation has been launched after a lorry overturned on a major North East A-road – causing three lanes to close for over ten hours.
Highways officers and emergency services were called to the A19/A189 Moor Farm Roundabout in Northumberland on Monday (July 4) after reports that a lorry had overturned – causing the vehicle to shed its load.
On arrival, traffic officers from Highways England initially closed one lane of the A189 southbound, before closing three of four lanes to allow recovery of the heavy goods vehicle.

At one point, the eastern quadrant of the roundabout remained closed which means there was no access to the A19 southbound, effectively closing the A19 between the A189 and the A1056, Killingworth.
During the recovery, cranes, lifts, and wagons were used to ensure that the HGV could be lifted.
In total, it took ten hours to recover the lorry – with the A189 fully opening at 3am.
Despite the reopening of the road, Highways North East has advised that some debris may have been left on the road, due to the lorry carrying rubbish, and has advised motorists to take extra care.
In the aftermath of the incident, an investigation has been launched in partnership between the emergency services and Highways teams.
