A MAN was taken to hospital today with serious leg injuries following a crash involving a motorbike and a car.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 12pm today (Wednesday), we were alerted to a collision involving a motorbike and a car on the A1290 near the Northern Spire Bridge.

"A man in his 50s was treated at the scene for a serious leg injury."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 11.49am this morning to reports of a road traffic incident involving a scooter and a car on the A1920 Riverside Road, Sunderland.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew, one rapid response paramedic, one specialist paramedic, and two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for further treatment."

Crews from the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were also in attendance.

A spokesperson for the service said: "We can confirm that two crews attended a four vehicle road traffic collision in Sunderland.

"Our Fire Control team received a call at 11:52 this morning, and two appliances from Marley Park and Sunderland Central Community Fire Stations were sent to the scene located outside of Sunderland Enterprise Park on the A1290 Wessington Way.

"The collision involved a motorcycle, two cars and a van.

"Our crews assisted at the scene other blue light colleagues from North East Ambulance Service and Northumbria Police by making safe the vehicles and the surrounding area."

The appliances left the scene at shorlty before 1pm."
