Emergency services helped diffuse a potential gas incident on Monday (June 27) morning – as a car collided with a gas box in a house’s front garden.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene of a car crash at around 10.30am on Bridge Street in Howden-le-Wear following reports of a one-car collision.

Officers from Durham Police had to close the road for around 30 minutes after it became clear that the driver had hit a gas box at a property on Bridge Street.

After keeping the road closed for an hour, the emergency services present were able to make the scene safe and opened the road at around 11.30am.

A spokesperson for Durham Police said: “Police were called to a one-vehicle collision shortly after 10.30am this morning (June 27) at Howden-le-Wear, Crook.

“It involved a grey Skoda Superb which crashed into the gas box of an address on Bridge Street.”

The driver of the Skoda was treated at the scene by paramedics with what are thought to be minor injuries.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 10.40am this morning to an incident on Bridge Street, Crook where a car had crashed into a house.

"We dispatched a clinical team leader and a double crewed ambulance. One patient was treated at the scene and taken home."

British Gas was called to replace the gas box that was damaged in the collision.
