Residents and business owners that have lost power in a County Durham village will have to wait until Monday (June 27) to have power restored, according to Northern Powergrid.

The affected properties in Great Lumley have been without power for several hours already after the piece of equipment was seen sparking before it burst into flames on Front Street, near Co-op.

Alongside the power outage, Front Street has been closed to allow emergency services and engineers to work at the scene and restore power, which has impacted the usual Go North East bus service that runs through the village.

During the outage, several businesses have been closed, including Indian restaurant and takeaway Haveli, and Co-op – with the owners of Haveli taking to social media to say: “We are CLOSED tonight.

“Unfortunately, an electric pole outside the Co-op has exploded and power is off in parts of the village, including our takeaway and restaurant.

“We apologise for any inconvenience. We will update you all as soon as power resumes.”

Despite many thinking that their power will be restored by 9.30pm on Sunday (June 26) as first scheduled by Northern Powergrid, the outage map for the energy provider now states that properties will be reconnected at midnight on Monday (June 27) morning.
