AFTER reading yet another excitable edition of Memories, some people may well say that the author deserves to be strung up – and that has now happened.

We’ve been hung from a lamp-post in Bishop Auckland.

It is part of an exhibition of “heritage heroes”.

Thirty banners have been created by the Heritage Action Zone as part of the build-up to September’s heritage festival.

“Heritage will only survive if people care about it,” says Dr Anne Allen, project manager of the action zone. “The banners show people who go beyond the call of duty to pass on stories of the past, of people who are giving new life to those stories, and of people who are actively involved in saving our buildings.”

The banners, which are sponsored by local businesses, feature portraits taken by photographer Andrew Heptinstall in black-and-white to give them a timeless feel and the look of an art exhibition.

The people featured on them range from academic archaeologists to football fans who’ve opened a new museum.

Many of the images will be explained more fully during the festival, which runs from September 9 to 26, and is called Picture This: Then and Now.

It is a real honour to have been included.
