It is understood that the burglar has tried to get into the house via the front and side door before breaking a window with a brick.

The incident was later reported to police, who subsequently launched an investigation.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "As part of our ongoing enquiries into the incident, we have today (Thursday) issued an appeal to the public, asking for their assistance.

"We have also issued the image of a man who was believed to have been in the area near Durham Road at the time of the burglary and could have information which can assist.

"The man, or anyone who knows him, is asked to contact police by either calling 101 or using the 'Tell Us Something' page on our website quoting crime reference 027383D/22."
