Holiday-makers have been warned of potential chaos as Spanish easyJet and Ryanair staff go on strike in a row over pay.

Passengers on flights to Spain on both of the airlines from Newcastle and Teesside airports could face cancellations or delays if a deal is not agreed between the airlines and unions.

Spanish easyJet staff will talk out for nine days in July with flights to Malaga, Palma and Barcelona affected. The low-cost airline currently flies 4 times a week to Palma from Newcastle and strikes could disrupt the plans of hundreds of British holiday makers.

The strike action will take place on 1-3, 15-17 and 29-31 July with the latest dates falling at the start of the school summer holidays.

Newcastle Airport told The Northern Echo it hasn’t been made aware of any of the strikes affecting the airport and that its advice to passengers is always to keep in touch with their airline.

A spokesperson for easyJet says that it is ‘disappointed’ with the strike action and that any passengers affected would be notified directly.

They said: “easyJet has been advised of strike action by its cabin crew based in Spain between 1-3, 15-17, and 29-31 July at its bases in Barcelona, Malaga, and Palma.

“We are extremely disappointed with this action as we have made considerable progress towards a new CLA and so would like to continue the constructive dialogue with them.

“Should the industrial action go ahead there could be some disruption to our flying programme to and from Malaga, Palma and Barcelona during the strike period but at this stage, easyJet plans to operate its full schedule and we would like to reassure customers that we will do everything possible to minimise any disruption.”

The Irish airline’s staff in Spain are also expected to walk out for three days from tomorrow, on June 24-26, then on June 30, and July 1-2.

The carrier flies to Palma and Alicante, Spain and Faro, Portugal from its base at Teesside airport.
