A major North East A-road had to be closed and Metro services cancelled after a lorry collided with a bridge on Thursday (June 23) morning - leaving drivers queuing for over an hour and a half.

Emergency services were called to the A19 southbound, near A193 Tynemouth Road, at around 8.20am following reports of a lorry striking a bridge over the A-road.

It's reported that as the vehicle hit the bridge, it shed part of its load, leaving debris on the road surface.

People waiting to enter the nearby Tyne Tunnel were left waiting an hour and a half, due to officers from Northumbria Police clearing the area.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 8.20am, it was reported that a lorry had collided with the metro bridge just before the Tyne Tunnel, southbound.

“No injuries have been reported and emergency services and partners remain at the scene.

“Traffic is currently moving slowly through the area and commuters are advised to seek an alternative route if possible.”

Alongside the impact on traffic, those that use the Metro were also affected, with Metro trains from Wallsend and North Shields currently not running.

People who normally use these services have been told that they can use bus services nearby with their Metro tickets.

A spokesperson for Nexus, who runs the Metro, said: "Due to a vehicle striking a bridge we currently have no trains running in either direction between Wallsend and North Shields. Tickets and passes can be used on Stagecoach services 22 & 317 and GoNorth East service 1."
