DURHAM's riverbank has been spruced up as part of an annual project to keep the city tidy.

Durham County Council’s 'Find and Fix' team has been supported by volunteers from King’s Church in the city to paint and revamp the Racecourse area of the riverbank.

The volunteers work with the council each year on a city centre project, alongside their regular activities such as garden projects.

Work has been carried out to paint the benches and seats along the riverbank, helping to create a warm welcome for people who live or work in, and visit the area.

Cllr Mark Wilkes, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and climate change, said: “We would like to thank all those who have taken the time to help repaint the street furniture.

"It is important that we work in partnership with our local community groups to take a pro-active approach to improving our green spaces.

The Northern Echo:

“It is great to see so many individuals and groups taking pride in their local area and helping to enhance it for the benefit of everyone.

"Having a range of green spaces that can be accessed by residents and visitors can help to bring communities together and benefits our physical and mental health. We look forward to working with more volunteers to continue making a difference across the county.”

The council’s Find and Fix teams focus on sites that need more intensive work than its general maintenance teams can give, such as parks that have become overgrown over time or cycleways and footpaths in need of attention.
