A MAN who came home from a drinking session in a drunken rage has fulfilled his pledge that he would be going back to prison.

Kai Taylor made threats with a knife to his pregnant partner and to another woman, who came to assist her to leave home.

Durham Crown Court heard that he also stabbed himself in the incident and forecast he would be going back to prison, while in his drunken state.

The court was told that during the incident, on Saturday May 21, Taylor also threatened to throw stones and bricks at a car that had come to take his partner away from the house.

He also put the knife to the back of one woman and lunged at the vehicle before pressing the blade against the car tyres, telling all the occupants he hoped they would “die”.

Matthew Hopkins, prosecuting, said Taylor then left the scene but was arrested a short time later.

Appearing at the plea hearing, via video link from nearby HMP Durham, the 22-year-old defendant, of Clara Street, Seaham, admitted charges of affray, possessing a knife or bladed article in public and assault by beating.

A victim statement from his partner said Taylor’s behaviour that day could not be condoned, adding that he was, “a different animal” when under the influence of alcohol.

She also described him as, “a bully” and said in the statement read to the court that she did not want to be in a relationship with him.

But, Mr Hopkins told the hearing that since giving the statement she has made a retraction statement.

The court heard the defendant has 16 convictions for 35 offences and is a three-strikes burglar, as well as having past cases of violence on his record.

Following his arrest for this incident he was recalled to prison to serve part of the unserved portion of his previous burglary sentence.

Ian West, for Taylor, said the main feature of mitigation in this case were his guilty pleas at the hearing.

“He’s realistic to know he committed these offences and has decided to plead.

“The upshot of all of that drunken stupidity on that day is that he may have seriously jeopardised his relationship with his unborn child.

“For that stupidity on this day he has paid a high price, regardless of the outcome today,” added Mr West.

Judge James Adkin told Taylor: “You have had the good sense to plead to affray, assault by beating and having a bladed article, on May 21, in a domestic abuse case after you had been drinking.

“You drank up to seven pints and got yourself in a terrible state.

“After the session you came back and said you were going to go back to jail.

“You stabbed yourself with the knife and threatened your pregnant partner.”

Imposing a 21-month prison sentence, the judge told Taylor it would have been 30 months if he had been convicted following a trial.
