Protestors have started their slow drive down the A1 to campaign against rising fuel prices.

The convoy left Stannington Services, near Morpeth, shortly after 3.30pm and is expected to arrive at Wetherby at approximately 8pm before turning around on the return journey.

Jay Garside, who organised the protest, told The Northern Echo yesterday he was expecting as many as 2,000 vehicles to take part.

Bus operator Stagecoach has warn of delays to its services along the A1 around Newcastle this afternoon while police have urged people not to call 999 or 101 to report tailbacks.

A Northumbria police spokesperson said: “We are aware of a planned slow drive protest taking place on part of the A1 today (Friday).

“The safety of everyone, including those participating in the protest, other members of the public and our officers will always be our utmost priority.”
