A tragedy at a Middlesbrough iron works was the catalyst for the choir, when some Welsh ironworkers put on a concert to aid the family of a worker who suffered a fatal accident at the foundry.

The choir has been going ever since with an unbroken record of performances that continued through both the First and Second World Wars until Covid 19 prevented any gatherings.

Choir member Peter McTiernan said: “However when the Covid restrictions were eased we unanimously decided that there was another war raging and it was time for action.

“We approached St Mary's Cathedral in Middlesbrough who willingly agreed to host a concert on behalf of the Ukraine and as they say the stage is now set.”

The concert starts at 7.30pm with guest performances from The Tees Valley Music Service Middlesbrough Community Choir and other soloists.

All proceeds will go directly to humanitarian aid for the people of the Ukraine.

The cathedral especially extends an invitation to any Ukrainian refugees and hosting families to come and be guests at the concert.

Tickets are £10. Call the cathedral on 01642 597750 or the Apollo Choir on 01642 821866 to check availability.
