Hard-hit families are turning to foodbanks in increasing numbers, with a Hambleton service seeing an almost 50 per cent rise in demand.

The rapid rise in the cost of living is having a major impact on Hambleton Foodshare which has issued 44 per cent more parcels in the first three months of 2022 compared to the same period last year.

More than 300 people per month have needed a parcel and in April the foodbank saw this rise to 349.

May was even higher, with 397 parcels issued, and the increased need is having a big impact on the Foodshare’s store cupboard.

Shelves are emptying very quickly and stocks are at their lowest in the foodbank's history.

For the first time they are having to purchase substantial volumes of tinned and packet food on a regular basis, sometimes three times a week.

Chairman Michael Webster said: “Particularly concerning is the number of parcels needed by families with children.

"This was happening before the increase in gas and electricity costs and so we are expecting it to accelerate.

“As well as new customers we are seeing people returning who have not needed help for several years.

"Many are in work, but they are struggling with the cost of food, heating and fuel.

"There are pensioners forced to live in one room and families dreading the breakdown of some vital household equipment, or children growing out of their shoes or school uniform.

“We appreciate that the rising costs not only means more customers for us but also make it harder for supporters to donate.

"Foodshare can only operate through the wonderful generosity of people and organisations in our communities.

"Despite growing challenges Hambleton Foodshare is determined to continue to meet the need.”

The foodbank is being supported by local businesses, with ABP Wessex at Leeming Bar recently donating a freezer which they keep stocked with burgers, sausages and meatballs – items all greatly welcomed by the customers.

Foodshare is also able to offer potatoes, carrots, apples and oranges, when they can, to improve the nutritional value of the parcels.

To receive emergency food help customers must be able to demonstrate their need, primarily by being referred through an agency or by self-referral for their first visit.
