MANY great things can be said about the North East and North Yorkshire and one of those things is the fantastic options we have when it comes to pubs – but which ones are the best?

As we enjoy the summer months and the (occasional) sunny weather, now is a great time for us to enjoy a cold pint, cocktail or even just a chilled soft-drink at our favourite local.

Beer gardens will be a prime place to enjoy the sunny afternoons and evenings.

The pubs on this list range from the more sophisticated venue with a wide range of cocktails and drinks and food items, to your traditional English pub.

However, one thing they all have in common is fantastic reviews across the board on TripAdvisor.

Check out the best pubs in the North East and North Yorkshire according to TripAdvisor:

1. The Half Moon Free House Pub, Abbey Road, Knaresborough

This North Yorkshire pub offers guests a “friendly service, great beer and great food” according to reviewers.

Reviewers have also mentioned its home-made items, showing that this pub takes its cuisine seriously.

Offering traditional British pub food the venue also offers vegetarian and gluten free options.

The place has scored four-and-a-half stars on TripAdvisor for food, service and value, as well as receiving a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers’ Choice Award.

Coming to the reviews; The Half Moon Free House has been reviewed very well, receiving 142 “excellent” five-star reviews out of 177 reviews all together.

One person said: “What a fantastic place! Great, friendly service, great beer and great food. Tom's home made paté was to die for! We will definitely be back soon!”

2. The Bay Horse Inn, Main Street, Burythorpe, Malton

Offering great value for money, The Bay Horse Inn has also scored itself a TripAdvisor 2021 Traveller’s Choice Award.

With prices ranging from £6 - £25, the venue offers great food for great value, which is compounded by its four-and-a-half stars for value on TripAdvisor.

It has also received five-stars for service as well, however, showing that staff really are “lovely” as reviewers have claimed.

The Inn has received 171 “excellent” five star reviews out of 201 reviews all together.

One person said: “What an absolute gem of a country pub! Fires and candles lit plus the setting is just perfect and interesting.

“Amazing home cooked food with excellent friendly service.

“Fish of the day special was cooked perfect fresh halibut and king prawns. We will return thank you very much.”

3. Revolution Durham, North Road, Durham

Another venue to pick up a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers’ Choice Award, this Durham pub also offers great value for money with prices ranging from £10-£15.

The pub offers traditional British food as well as street food, and has scored itself four-and-a-half stars for its food offering.

Revolution Durham has scored itself 356 five-star reviews out of a total of 431 reviews all together.

One person said: “Lovely large terrace overlooking River. Great place for lunch in the Sprng sunshine. Efficient and friendly service.

“Lots of nachos, burgers and pizzas on menu with many veggie options. They also have a chicken katsu curry which was very good.”

4. The Ship Isis, Silksworth Row, Sunderland

Coming in at number 2 for nightlight in Sunderland according to TripAdvisor, The Ship Isis is a great little pub with fantastic staff, according to reviewers.

The venue has secured 85 five star reviews out of 108 reviews all together, as well as 16 four-star reviews.

One reviewer said: “A very warm traditional pub , with amazing food which was served quickly too. We liked the atmosphere much better than large noisy pubs in the town centre.”

Another said: “Big shout out to this excellent pub and staff from our running group last night, an absolute gem of a pub, we really appreciated our visit. Thank you.”

5. The Hambletonian, The Green, Norton, Stockton-on-Tees

This Stockton pub offers almost five-star service in all aspects including food, service and value for money.

Reviewers have raved about its “absolutely brilliant” takeaway Sunday lunch as well as a great choice of parmos.

The place has scored itself 85 five-star reviews out of 136 reviews all together, and 32 four-star reviews.

One person said: “We had very tasty beef and pork Sunday lunches. Good portion sizes, well presented and good value for money.

“My daughter loved the chocolate brownie desert! Nice cosy atmosphere and good service. Recommended!”

6. Threes a Crowd, West Park, Harrogate

The Northern Echo:

Describing itself as a “modern gastropub” this venue offers “quality British food in a relaxed setting” according to its TripAdvisor description.

The menu is “ever-changing” as well and those looking to have a drink can choose from a “hand picked wine list.”

Prices range from £10 to £45 with many people complimenting the steak tartar as well as “great new desserts.”

Threes a Crowd has picked up a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers Choice Award and secured itself 334 five-star reviews out of a total of 428 reviews all together.

One person said: “My partner and I have been following three's a crowd on Instagram since seeing a post via Yorkshire food guide.

“We'd been wanting to visit for a while and last Saturday we booked a hotel and came to Harrogate from Sheffield, purely to come to the restaurant

“We were not disappointed ... The food we had was delicious, there were a couple of things we would've liked to try that weren't available, but the waiter found us alternatives that were very nice.

“The staff are very knowledgeable and informative, they made us feel special

“We will definitely be back again soon.”

7. Stapylton Arms, High Street, Middlesbrough

The Stapylton Arms in Middlesbrough offers some great traditional British comfort food for with a  great service.

Reviewers have praised the venues quiz night, along with great staff and a “friendly environment.”

It has scored 59 five-star reviews and 18 four-star reviews out of a total of 90 reviews all together.

One person said: “Lovely pub! Staff are always friendly and welcoming food is 100 % delicious. We wouldn’t eat anywhere else.”

Another person added: “Would highly recommend the quiz nights really friendly environment thank you Alison and Craig for a great evening and great service!”

8. Union Arms, High Street, Yarm, Stockton-on-Tees

This Yarm pub has received raving reviews for its friendly staff and pizza options.

The venue has scored itself 63 five-star reviews and 15 four-star reviews  out of a total of 92 reviews all together.

One person said: “Had a pleasant evening with friends at the Union Arms. Very warm and friendly staff with a polite and bubbly manager.

“Pizza was delightful too which was an added bonus. Will definitely be back.”

Another person added: “Stopped in before the game against boro, bar man was very friendly and talkative, made for a great day, good pint as well.”

9. Number 29 Alehouse, Gin and Tapas Bar, Frenchgate, Richmond

Number 29 is another great value-for-money venue which offers a bit of different option for cuisine – Mediterranean and Spanish.

The pub, or alehouse, has received five stars in all aspects of service such as food, service and value.

It has also secured itself 86 five-star reviews out of a total of 98 reviews all together.

One person said: “We were only staying one night in Richmond, and needed to find a restaurant.

“We came upon No.29 by chance, and so glad we did. We took a table between sittings - ordinarily you need to book in advance.

“The staff were very friendly and helpful. The tapas were excellent, and they a had a great choice of beer and wine. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.”

10. Little 3, Finkle Street, Thirsk

The Little 3 has been praised for its “great choice of beers” as well as great music as well, especially for those from the 70s.

The venue has received almost five-stars in all aspects including food, service, value and atmosphere.

Little 3 has scored itself 251 five-star reviews and 118 four-star reviews out of a total of 454 reviews all together.

One person said: “Good choice of beers, sadly no food but a very warm welcome. Back ground music fantastic for a child of the 70s.

“We really loved it rare to find this in a pub nowadays. Relaxed atmosphere.

“Will be back for the band tomorrow. New favourite pub..Also dog friendly. Clean and warm.”
