THIRSK town centre has been adorned with a stunning display of crocheted tableaus to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee - and visitors are calling it the Yarnbombers' best display yet.

From Royal Corgis to Queen's guards, Union Jacks and even knitted depictions of Her Majesty herself, the Thirsk Yarnbombers have truly outdone themselves this spring.

It has taken the group nearly five months to create around 25 separate pieces dotted about the town centre which are delighting visitors.

Group chairwoman Irene Marwood said: "We are very proud of it and I have been hearing that people are saying it's our best display yet - though of course I am biased!"

Irene explained that the Yarnbombers worked both individually and in groups to create the pieces, many of which are incredibly intricate.

She said: "The crowns people tended to do in groups because they involve some very fine work.

"We started work on the display in January so it's taken the best part of five months to get it together."

The Yarnbombers have also been hard at work with other projects, including a display for Ukraine and knitting yellow flower badges in support of the Ukrainians which have been selling like hot-cakes in local shops.

Irene said: "Boots the chemist has sold a huge amount and we've raised £1,600 to go towards helping the refugees in Ukraine so we're really proud of that.

"We kept the Ukraine display up on the other side of the road and it fits really well with the Jubilee display."

Other projects that have been keeping the Yarnbombers busy include creating hanging baskets for local businesses to raise funds.

This has seen the group crochet everything from fish and chips to shrimps and butchers' themed baskets.

Irene said: "Local businesses and the community really do support us, it is a whole community thing and it really does bring people into the town.

"We let the council and information office know when the displays are going up because we've heard that people come to Thirsk especially to see them and are disappointed if there's nothing up when they come."

And judging by comments on social media, the magnificent display is certainly a huge hit with the public.

Amanda Jayne took to facebook to say: "Well done to everyone, fabulous work, a touching tribute for a special occasion and a very special lady.

"Congratulations to some very talented people."

Elizabeth Malson wrote: "A wonderful display, some really talented people in Thirsk.

"You should get lots of visitors to see this, well really it is a 'spectacle'."
