TWO people were taken to hospital after a lorry and car crashed on a busy North East road on Tuesday.

Firefighters had to release a number of people, who became trapped after the collision on the Sunderland Highway, in Washington, at about 1.30pm yesterday.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We can confirm that on the afternoon of Tuesday 24 May three appliances attended a road traffic collision involving a car and a lorry on the Sunderland Highway, near to the Pattinson Industrial Estate in Washington.

“The first crew was on the scene at 1.35pm, within four-minutes of the initial emergency call being made to our Fire Control Team.

“The three appliances were deployed from Farringdon, Sunderland Central and Washington Community Fire Stations with reports of persons being trapped in the two vehicles.

“The firefighters used specialist cutting equipment and administered first aid at the scene.

The Northern Echo:

“The crews left the incident at 2.26pm.”

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 13:27 to a two vehicle road traffic collision on the A1231 in Washington.

"We dispatched two vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team and two double crewed ambulances. Two patients have been transported to Sunderland Royal Hospital."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 12.40pm yesterday (Tuesday) we received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A1231 in Washington.

“Emergency services attended and the road was temporarily closed."
