TWO people have been taken to hospital following a multi-vehicle crash on Sunderland A-road earlier this afternoon.

The incident was first reported at 12.34pm by AA and occurred on the A1231 Sunderland Highway from Pattison Road to the A19.

Initially the crash had resulted in the A1231 being closed at the A19 west side and police were on scene.

However, reports suggest that a second crash caused the Police to close both carriageways.

Half-an-hour later the eastbound carriageway was reopened, however, the westbound carriageway remained closed following the two separate incident.

An hour later both carriageways were reopened following the crash, however, North East Ambulance Service confirmed that two people had been taken to hospital following the incident.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service, said: “We were called at 13:27 to a two vehicle road traffic collision on the A1231 in Washington.

“We dispatched two vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team and two double crewed ambulances.

“Two patients have been transported to Sunderland Royal Hospital.”

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police added: “At 12.40pm today (Tuesday) we received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A1231 in Washington.

“Emergency services attended and the road was temporarily closed but has since reopened.”
