A STUDENT football team is looking to raise funds in a charity football match against their lecturers.

South Shields Marine School’s ‘Winterbottom Wanderers’ was set up by senior marine students, Will Hibbs and Robin Hagan in March 2022.

The team will take on South Shields Marine School teaching staff on Saturday, May 28 at Temple Park, John Reid Road, South Shields.

Proceeds will go to the Dr Winterbottom Charity - named in honour of Victorian philanthropist, Dr Thomas Masterman Winterbottom whose financial legacy led to the founding, in 1861, of the original marine school.

Simon Ashton, Principal of South Shields Marine School said: “The Dr Winterbottom Charity supports students with grants for short-term educational help enabling them to study and progress more effectively, as well as backing budding college entrepreneurs to start their own business.

“This is a great opportunity for young players, students and staff to come together to support the charity and raise awareness in the community. We hope this will be the first of many events like this.”

Will and Robin, co-founders of the student team, also put their creative skills to good use, designing a bespoke team badge, incorporating the college logo.

The charity match is free to attend and takes place from 2pm to 3.45pm, with the public allowed access from 1pm.
