In North Yorkshire, a 15 bedroomed historic hotel gutted by fire eight years ago is up for auction for £175,000.

The Grade 11 listed Bridge House Hotel opposite Catterick Racecourse near Richmond was badly damaged by fire in February 2014 when it was being renovated.

Since then the former pub, restaurant and hotel has remained empty, although there have been moves to repair the roof and it is currently covered in scaffolding.

Two previous attempts to sell it through auctions have failed.

Now Strettons in London are hoping it is third time lucky.

They’ve listed it on their auction for Thursday, May 26 with a price estimate of £175,000 to £200,000.

They did not respond to requests to comment but it is listed as vacant for repair with development potential.

Previous estimates had put the building at £300,000 in 2020 when it failed to sell twice. The building parts of which date back to the 17th century has had 18th, 19th and 20th century additions, but it’s understood it has been used as a public house and hotel since the mid 1800’s when it was known as the George and Dragon Inn. Before that it was used as a private house.

In February 2014 during renovation work there was a major fire, six crews from Bedale, Colburn and Richmond battled to bring the blaze under control but the hotel was extensively damaged with large parts of the roof destroyed.

It was unoccupied at the time and no one was injured. Since then moves have been made to repair the roof but there has been some internal damage by vandals The hotel stands on a two-acre site.
