OFFICERS for a missing North East man have confirmed a body has been found.

Raymond Griffiths, 63, of Hebburn, was last seen on Monday, May 16 and was reported missing on Friday after his loved ones were unable to make contact with him.

An extensive search was launched and several lines of inquiry were followed in a bid to local the man.

Police have now confirmed a body was found on Sunday by the Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue team.

Formal identification has yet to take place but officers believe it to be Mr Griffiths. 

His family are being supported by specialist officers at this devastating time.

Police do not believe there to be any third party involvement in his death and a report will now be made for the coroner.

Detective Inspector Christopher Raper-Smith, of Northumbria Police said said: “This is an incredibly sad update and one we certainly did not hope to deliver.

“Our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones. We will continue to offer them support during this extremely difficult time and would ask that their privacy is respected.

“We want to thank everyone who shared our appeal to help find Raymond, as well as all our officers, partners and volunteers who assisted with our search. It is hugely appreciated.”
