A WOMAN has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after she was knocked over on Durham’s Milburngate Bridge on Tuesday night.

Durham Road Policing Unit closed the bridge in both directions for several hours while they dealt with the incident.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "Police were called shortly after 11pm, last night (May 17) to reports of a one vehicle collision involving a pedestrian on the A690, Milburngate bridge, Durham.

"A woman in her 40s was transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries.

"The vehicle, a white Skoda Superb was recovered from the scene."

A North East Ambulance spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the Milburngate Bridge in Durham at 11.12pm last night.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew, a specialist paramedic and a clinical team leader, and transported one patient to the RVI for further treatment."
