POLICE say they have closed the A1(M) near Sedgefield to allow an air ambulance to land due to a crash.

The A1(M) at Junction 60 and 61 will be closed Northbound and Southband to allow an Air Ambulance to land following a crash.

Police have said they will update drivers as soon as the road reopens.

A spokesperson for AA said: "Partially blocked due to crash on A1(M) Southbound from J61 A688 Tursdale Road (Bowburn) to J60 A689 (Bradbury)."

According to Durham Constabulary, the Northbound carriageway has reopened, however the Southbound carriageway is still closed.

The road has now fully re-opened and police have thanked drivers for their patience.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called just before 6pm yesterday (May 17) to a single-vehicle collision on the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) near Bradbury interchange.

"A man was taken to hospital as a result of the incident.

"The road was closed until 8.20pm to allow the Great North Air Ambulance to attend the scene and allow for recovery of the vehicle."
