RAIL journeys in the North East have been temporarily cancelled and delayed after a person has been struck by a train - blocking several routes and causing transport chaos in the region.

Passengers travelling through Newcastle and Morpeth stations are facing extensive cancellations after London North Eastern Railway (LNER) confirmed that a person has being hit by a train between the two locations.

According to the rail company, this will have a knock-on impact to passengers at other stations further north and south of Newcastle and Morpeth.

In a statement, LNER posted on their social media channel this afternoon: "It is with great sadness that due to a person being hit by a train between Newcastle and Morpeth all lines are blocked.

"Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed.

"Please bear with us, we will update you as soon as we have any further information."

It's expected that the delays on the rail lines will be for some time.

Passengers are asked to check the LNER Twitter page here, and National Rail here.
