A LONG-AWAITED awards night was held at a North-East school to recognise the achievements of Year 11 students.

Peter Gibson, member of parliament for Darlington, presented dozens of prizes to 2021 leavers at the town’s Hummersknott Academy, celebrating students who had proven themselves to be outstanding young people during their time at school through academic, sporting, creative, and community efforts.

Speaking to the students, Mr Gibson said: “I want to congratulate everybody this evening for all their achievements. It’s a real testament to your skills, your talents, and your abilities.

“I wish you all the very best for your futures. Remember that you are a product of a fantastic school, and this amazing town.”

The event had been previously delayed due to Covid, but teachers were delighted to welcome back the Year 11 students who left in June 2021 to finally celebrate their achievements.

James Keating, principal of Hummersknott Academy, said: “Every year it’s an immense pleasure to welcome our Year 11s back for this event, and to recognise the fantastic achievements they’ve made during their five years at Hummersknott.

“The last two years have been challenging, but the way these students adapted and took it in stride was amazing. They are everything that embodies Hummersknott, and we are immensely proud of them. I’m confident that they will continue to show the world the ability, integrity, and strength of character that we are celebrating tonight.”
