MORE than two dozen football fans were given a lift to a pub in a police riot van.

The scene was captured on camera yesterday (May 8), when Middlesbrough were playing Preston in the final Championship match of the season.

Footage of the incident was captured on video, sparking commentators to describe the van as “like a Tardis” after 26 people were spotted piling out.

The Northern Echo:

The video has been shared widely on social media sparking hundreds of comments, with many sharing their disbelief about how many fans had squeezed in the van.

Our MFC tweeted it was one of the "highlights of the day".

Lancashire Police has not revealed the circumstances of why they were transporting the fans but said it was “aware” that a video was circulating and says it is now investigating it.

A group of fans - complete with an inflatable pink elephant - had been spotted earlier in the day looking for a pub close to the Deepdale ground.

The Northern Echo:

Police in Preston were broadly praised for how they handled away fans on Sunday.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “We are aware of the video circulating and are investigating the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”
