MOTORISTS in Darlington have been told to avoid the Woodland Road area of the town for the "foreseeable future" after a serious crash closed the road earlier today.

Both police officers and paramedics were called to the scene of the incident at 10.15am this morning between Millbank Road and Hollyhurst Road.

Those looking to avoid the area have been trying to find alternative routes to their destinations from both directions.

The Northern Echo has put together a guide of some of the routes that drivers can take to avoid getting stuck in heavy traffic and congestions queues.

Here are the routes:

  • Drivers stuck on Woodland Road can turn off at Piermont Crescent, follow the road until you get to Abbey Road and continue on at either Duke Street or Stanhope Road South, dependent on your destination.
  • Traffic can turn around on Woodland Road and head back towards the B6280 and follow the road until you get to Coniscliffe Road into Darlington or the A67 out of Darlington.
  • For those stuck at the other side of the collision, drivers can turn down Stanhope Road North, and either follow Duke Street or Stanhope Road South, dependent on the destination.
  • Those that are at the end of the traffic queue, potentially towards Four Riggs, motorists can follow the A68 and the A167 towards the centre of Darlington.
