EMERGENCY services in County Durham have warned of underage drinking after having to deal with a teenager who had consumed a potentially life-threatening ‘cocktail’ of antibiotics and vodka.

Police officers from Bishop Auckland were called to reports of a ‘medical episode’ near to the River Wear earlier this week.

On attending the scene, along with the North East Ambulance Service, the officers were met with several teenagers who had been drinking – with the emergency crews having to search for the ‘secluded’ area that the young person in distress was located in.

Through the help of the Hazardous Area Response Team at NEAS, the teenager was found responsive at the scene, but had taken the dangerous mix of antibiotics and vodka, which the police and ambulance crews believe caused the incident.

According to police officers that attended, the group were reminded of the dangers of drinking at the riverside and were moved away from the river.

Following the incident, PCSO Rubi Barron, from Bishop Auckland Neighbourhood Team, has reiterated the ‘deadly’ nature of underage drinking and the dangers it could pose to young people in County Durham.

She said: “We’re not naïve to think that teenagers don’t drink alcohol however we are certain of the dangers of high levels of alcohol consumption, mixed with drinking near to riverbanks."

“While some parents and guardians may feel relieved that their child is “only” drinking, it is important to remember that it effects their judgment and coping skills to handle alcohol wisely.”

"Can we take this opportunity to remind licensed premises on their responsibilities regarding the sale of alcohol and ensuring alcohol is not sold or passed on to anyone underage. We would like to remind parents and carers to ensure their children are safe and aware of the risks and dangers when nearby to rivers."
