THIS day 90 years ago was FA Cup final day, and The Northern Echo Echo devoted a page to previewing Newcastle's game with Arsenal at Wembley.
Arsenal, managed by Herbert Chapman, were the favourites and took the lead in the 16th minute, but Newcastle equalised with the most controversial goal in football – until the 1966 World Cup final.
Photographs developed after the match showed the ball was clearly out of play when Jimmy Richardson crossed it for Jack Allen to score, and Allen added the winner in the second half.
