EMERGENCY services have been dealing with a multi-vehicle crash on the A1 Western Bypass near the Metrocentre.

The crash involving three vehicles in the northbound carriageway has caused major traffic disruption this afternoon (April 22).

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 13.22pm to a three-vehicle road traffic collision on the A1 northbound near to Derwenthaugh Industrial Estate.

"We were stood down by police colleagues as no-one required medical assistance."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 1.30pm today (Friday) police received a report of a three-car collision on the A1 northbound near Derwenthaugh.

“No one is believed to have sustained any serious injuries and officers remain in attendance at the scene at this time.

“The road was partially blocked so traffic is congested and motorists are ask to avoid the area this time, if possible.”

The AA has reported that the lane has now been reopened, though queues remain.
