COUNCIL chiefs have warned motorists a two-hour parking limit has always been in place in Barnard Castle and will be enforced - after missing signs were replaced.

The clarification came after people took to social media complaining about people being ticketed when signs went up along the town's Horsemarket and Market Place.

Many people had been under the mistaken impression the two-hour restriction had not applied for a number of years.

Kenny Walker posted on Teesdale Road Watch Facebook Page: “Beware - the 2 hour parking limit sign has returned to the Horsemarket/Market Place stretch of kerbside parking in Barney and there have been a fair few tickets issued over the past few days!”

He added: "It’s just gone back to what it was before they re-did the pedestrian crossing: 2 hours free parking between 9am and 6pm."

Paul Raine said: "Was never a parking problem until DCC took over. Just saying."

Amanda Pinkney said: “He (the parking attendant) was out on a mission yesterday. The impending dread returning to my vehicle after I noticed cars either side of mine had tickets.

"Luckily returned under the two hours. Phew!"

Kathy Turnbull remarked: ” You can be in Bishop in 30 mins and shop all day free.”

Michelle Samson said: "It’s been down for 4 years, by my reckoning, since the pedestrian crossing at the co-op was altered. Presumably, someone found the original sign down the back of a sofa in Durham?!!"

In response Dave Wafer, Durham County Council’s head of transport and contract services, said: “The two-hour parking limit has been in place in the town centre for a number of years and enforcement has always been carried out.

“The only exceptions to this have been in locations where signs making people aware of the limit have been damaged or removed by others, in which cases we have not enforced in those specific areas until they could be replaced.

“New signs have now been installed throughout the area to make all visitors aware that a two-hour limit is in place and, as such, enforcement will be continuing.”
