TWO teenagers have been arrested following a fire at a derelict building in County Durham.  

Emergency services attended the fire at around 5.30pm yesterday (April 12) evening after reports of large flames coming from the older Miners' Welfare Club in Willington.

Firefighters battled to get the flames under control, while the police closed Hunwick Road in the village.

Residents were advised to keep their windows closed during the incident, and no one was injured during the fire.

Following an investigation and CCTV obrtained, Durham Police has confirmed this evening that one teenage boy and a teenage girl have been arrested on suspicion of arson. 

The pair are currently in custody.

A spokesperson for Durham Police said: "Two teenagers have been arrested following a fire at a derelict former leisure centre in Willington.

"A patrolling police officer first raised the alarm after seeing smoke coming from the Spectrum Leisure Centre in Willington at around 5.30pm last night (April 12).

"An investigation was quickly launched and following CCTV enquiries and other information from the public, officers have now arrested a teenage boy and teenager girl on suspicion of arson."
