A CYCLIST was punched and then robbed of his bike in a shocking County Durham incident in broad daylight that also saw a police officer sustain minor injuries.

The incident happened in Lowhills Road, Peterlee, on Saturday, April 8 at around 5pm, with emergency services attending after reports of a 'disturbance'.

Durham Police attended, with the cyclist and a police officer sustaining minor injuries which did not require medical attention.

A man has since been charged with the incident.

Kyle Lawson, of Tenth Street, Horden, appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court yesterday (April 12) charged with robbery and assaulting an emergency worker.

The 32-year-old was remanded and will appear at Durham Crown Court on Tuesday, May 10.
