THE sudden death of a County Durham vet has resulted in hundreds of tributes as friends and family described him as “totally gifted, generous and kind.”

Jamie Stewart's death was announced earlier this month by Oaklands Equine Hospital in Yarm, Teesside, where he once worked, treating thousands of patients.

In a statement issued on Facebook, the vet group said that the 34-year-old of Barnard Castle will be “missed beyond words" as hundreds paid tribute.

It continued to say that Jamie was “an incredible vet, friend and colleague,” and it was “hard to imagine a world without” him.

The statement saw an outpouring of love for the vet with it receiving nearly 1,000 reactions and 132 comments.

One said: “All these comments prove what a caring person he was. Everyone has their memories of this exceptional man.”

Others paid tribute to a "true gentleman."

Another person said: “I am truly devastated to hear this tragic news. Jamie was such a lovely person, meticulous with his care and treatment to horses, his compassion and caring nature to all and he will be truly missed by all who knew him a true gentleman.”

Zetland Point to Point, a racecourse that Jamie frequented, also issued a statement on Facebook saying they were “extremely saddened” by the passing of Mr Stewart.

It said: “Jamie will be greatly missed. He was a lovely, kind gentleman who had a great passion for Point to Pointing and gave his time willingly.

“Known simply, by many, as Jamie the Vet”

In a statement to The Northern Echo, issued by a friend of the Stewart family and chairman of Zetland Point to Point racecourse, Jamie Cameron, paid tribute.

He said: “Jamie always had time to help those of a lesser ability when at University and his humble, kind nature endeared him to many.”

According to Mr Cameron, Jamie was “highly academic, totally gifted and generous but terribly impulsive and a workaholic.”

He added that Mr Stewart had just started working in Northallerton at Mile House Veterinary Centre before his death.

Mr Cameron said: “He was happy in his new job and liked his colleagues very much.”

Jamie leaves behind parents Mike and Pam, together with his sister Camilla.

Mr Stewart's funeral is on Thursday, April 28 at 11.15am at Wycliffe Church in Barnard Castle in County Durham.
