WORK to repair a damaged sewer pipe in a seaside town is now complete.

The repairs to the pipe at the Cat Nab car park in Saltburn have been finished and the Northumbrian Water is preparing to hand the site back to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

The pipe was damaged on February 24 by a third party carrying out work for the council.

The damage resulted in sewage spilling into the sea, though agencies have assured members of the public that there is no health risk.

Richard Warneford, Wastewater Director at Northumbrian Water, said: “This has been a long and complex repair, but it is now complete.

The Northern Echo:

“We would like to once again thank residents of and visitors to Saltburn for their understanding and support while we and our partners have carried out this work.”

The backfilling of the excavation and removal of equipment is being finalised.

The site will be handed back to the council on Tuesday, March 29.

People had been warned to keep out of the water, which runs from Skelton Beck to the sea at Saltburn, until the situation was resolved.

The work took longer than anticipaed due to complications caused by where the pipe is located and specialist fittings needed.

Engineers had to build a pop-up treatment works from scratch to help minimise the impact on the environment from the leak.
