POLICE are appealing for information from other motorists after a fatal collision near a junction on the A1(M).

A female motorist in her 80s was driving a Skoda Fabia which struck a barrier on the southbound carriageway near Scotch Corner, at about 4.50pm on Thursday (March 24).

It is understood she joined the A1(M) on the southbound slip road from junction 53.

As the Skoda entered the A1(M) it is said to have collided with an Audi A5, which was travelling in the same direction, before it left the carriageway.

The woman, who is from Ryedale, North Yorkshire, was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

As emergency services dealt with the incident the road was closed to traffic, between junctions 53 and 52, from Scotch Corner to Catterick.
