THOUSANDS of homes in Darlington, County Durham and parts of Teesside have had their power restored after a problem with equipment.

Initially more than 5,000 homes were affected, though many people only lost power for a few minutes. 

The remaining 3,540 homes in Darlington, Newton Aycliffe, Yarm, Eaglescliffe and Hexham areas which were affected have now had their power restored.

The postcodes affected were  DL1, DL2, DL3, DL5, NE46, TS15,TS16.

The fault was reported at about 2.30pm and power was restored ahead of 4.15pm, as was initially indicated by Northern Powergrid.

Northern Powergrid the power cut was caused by an unexpected problem with cables or equipment.

The Northern Echo:

There is a separate issue affecting 140 homes in the DL13 area, in Weardale, which was reported just before 10am and is due to be fixed by 6.30pm.

And another 120 homes in the DL15 postcode, around the Crook area, are currently without power due to a fault.

Power is expected to be restored there by 4.30pm.

Anyone who needs to report an emergency is asked to call 105.
