MEDALS won by an Army officer during two world wars will be auctioned.

The medals were awarded to Brigadier Gerald Waldon Browne Tarleton and include a Distinguished Service Order and a Military Cross with bar.

The collection, which will be sold at Tennant Auctioneers, Leyburn, North Yorkshire, on February 29, also includes the 1914 Star, the Indian General Service medal with the bar Waziristan, the Order of the White Eagle of Serbia and the Belgium Red Cross medal First Class (1945). His CBE, awarded in 1945, will also be auctioned. The medals carry an estimate of £5,000 to £6,000.

Brig Tarleton was born in 1893 and served in France, Belgium, Gallipoli, the Balkans and Germany during the First World War.

In 1940, he was promoted to Colonel, with the rank of acting Brigadier, and took command of the 17th Infantry Brigade, part of the 5th Infantry Division. He took part in operations in Madagascar, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Sicily.

In 1944, he became a Brigadier and took part in the Normandy landings. He retired from the Army in 1947 and became secretary for the Yorkshire Brewers' Association. He died in 1955 at his home in Harrogate.
