EMERGENCY repair work is underway on a damaged sewer pipe that is spilling onto the beach and into the North Sea at Saltburn.

The pipe was damaged by a third party working in the Cat Nab Car Park, next to Skelton Beck.

It is believed sewage is being pumped into Saltburn Gill, Skelton Beck and the North sea as a result of a pipe being damaged during flood prevention work on the edge of the car park.

Northumbrian Water is working to fix the issues “as soon as possible” and the area affected has been cordoned off by Redcar and Cleveland Council.

People are asked to stay away from that area of the beach while this work takes place.

A spokeswoman for the water body said: “Major repair work is required to fix the damage and is expected to be ongoing for a number of days. We will provide updates on timescales as soon as they are available.

“In parallel with the emergency repair, tankers will be running continuously to try to reduce the volume of the spill.

“The damaged pipe would normally take the waste to our sewage treatment works in Marske.

“To protect homes from sewer flooding, we are unable to stop the flow through the pipe while the repair is carried out.

“We want to assure all customers in the area that every effort is being taken to complete this repair as quickly as possible.”

The Environment Agency confirmed it was investigating the incident.

A spokeswoman for the authority said: “We are investigating the release of sewage into local watercourses after pipework was reportedly damaged next to Northumbrian Water’s pumping station at Mill Farm, Saltburn.

"Our officers have visited the site to take water samples, which will be analysed to assess the impact of the pollution.

“We are working with Northumbrian Water to mitigate any potential impact on the environment.

"We urge anyone witnessing suspected pollution in our seas and watercourses to contact us on 0800 80 70 60.”
