Having established itself as one of the country’s leading UTCs, UTC South Durham has become a popular choice with young people across County Durham looking to study for a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM).

Recognised for its success in moulding career and life ready students, UTC South Durham has been granted £1.1 million in funding to extend their current facilities. The building will offer a wider range of post 16 courses including the new Engineering T Level which will launch in September 2022.

The Northern Echo:

Selected to be one of the only colleges in the North East to offer Engineering T-Levels, it is planned that the new facility will be used by Sixth Form students. T Levels are an exciting Level 3 pathway for young people post 16, to develop their technical ability in engineering.

The course also enables students to work with industry to gain real world experiences encouraging them to apply their knowledge and to develop their core skills. Having this additional engineering annex will allow current and future students to develop their understanding and have access to further specialist equipment. UTC’s current facilities include an Engineering Hall with Haas CNCs, robotic arm and welding bays as well as a Festo Mechatronics Lab and CAD Suite.

The Northern Echo:

Tom Dower, Principal of UTC South Durham said “We are proud to be able to offer a specialist facility to our Sixth Form students on our new T-Level courses. Our links with employers have told us students need to have technical skills as well as strong academic grades and this facility will be perfect to help students develop those highly demanded skills”.

The Northern Echo:

Students can learn more about Sixth Form and the delivery of T-Levels at a virtual information evening with Q&A on Thursday 10th February, 6.00pm. Interested students and families can register for the event at www.utcsouthdurham.org
