A DEVELOPER has been given the go-ahead to build 20 affordable homes.

Believe Housing asked for planning permission to build 11 three-bedroom and seven two-bedroom houses and two bungalows near Durham Road, Wolsingham.

Principal planning officer Steven Pilkington said five electric vehicle chargers were proposed in the site.

There was one letter of objection raising concerns about the capacity of schools and doctors’ surgeries.

Helen Heward, speaking for the developer at a Durham County Council planning committee meeting, said: “The proposed development offers an abundance of social, environmental and economic benefits.”

Councillor David Boyes said: “This is a very strong development.

“This is in an area which desperately needs some affordable housing.”

Councillors approved the scheme by a unanimous vote, as recommended by planners, and the developer is to pay £105,000 towards footpaths, education, open spaces and biodiversity.

Cllr Anita Savory said: “I live in the village very near to this site. I welcome this development. Affordable housing is always in great demand.

“The development is sympathetic to the area.”

Cllr Eddy Adam said he was disappointed the plans did not recognise the need to reduce carbon emissions.

Ms Heward replied energy efficiencies had been improved through insulation and electric vehicle charging points.

She said: “There has been an effort made but there has to be a point where financial viability comes into it.

“Solar panels, whilst they were considerded, would basically render it financially unviable.”
