A COUPLE who dreamed of seeing the famous Northern Lights managed to do just that – whilst driving around their home village in County Durham.

Shaun and Karen Teasdale caught the spectacular blue, green, purple and pink lights rippling across the night sky on Friday.

Machine driver and drystone waller Mr Teasdale, from Woodland, near Bishop Auckland, has wanted to see the aurora borealis for years.

He knew from websites and apps that there was a good chance of them being visible from Northern England, so kept a close eye on the sky after sunset.

Just after 9pm the 34-year-old and nursery worker Karen, 41, drove around the Woodland and Hamsterley area until after midnight, capturing the natural phenomenon on their camera phones.

Mr Teasdale said: “We just got lucky as we have always wanted to see them but never thought we could see them in the village where I grew up.

“I’ve been out looking a lot but never caught them before.

“I'm keen on the Northern Lights so follow them a lot, I knew there was a big chance of a showing with the data on various apps so we just took a chance and went out we got really lucky.”
