IT'S not every day that you spot a celebrity when going to pick up your takeaway, but for customers in one County Durham town – that’s exactly what happened at the end of last week.

Even though Friday night might be a popular time to have a takeaway in houses up and down the country, it appears that comedian and actor, Johnny Vegas, is also partial to a Friday night fish and chip fix after he was spotted visiting an independent business in the region last Friday (January 14).

The award-winning actor chose to drop in on Johnson’s Traditional Fish and Chips on Front Street in Sacriston – giving those in the shop a little bit of a surprise, mixed with some slight shock.

Despite hearing about plenty of celebrities that would turn down some interaction and photo opportunities, the owners of the fish and chip shop have confirmed that St Helens born, Vegas, was “down to earth” and “a total gentleman” – stopping to have photos with the owners and staff, as well as chatting about what he was doing in County Durham.

According to those that are closest to Johnson’s Fish and Chips, the comedian was visiting the region to film more of his popular series, Carry on Glamping, which sees him, and his assistant Bev, join groups of bus enthusiasts to create the country's coolest glamping site out of old, repurposed vehicles.

Despite Johnny’s glamping site finding a home in Washburn, North Yorkshire, he does have to travel to collect older vehicles and visit other beauty spots for the hit Channel 4 show, which explains his detour to County Durham.

After posting the photo of the comedian’s trip to Johnson’s Traditional Fish and Chips on local group ‘Gripe & Grumble & News’ , the image garnered a lot of reaction online, with others recalling their experiences at meeting him, with one saying: “He is a lovely guy, we saw him in the Lakes and he came over to speak to us, so down to earth and a very special person.”
